Saint Archer Double IPA

Saint Archer Double IPA 1
Saint Archer Brewing Double IPA. 8.3% abv. 90 IBU. Copper-golden color. Thick foamy head. Excellent retention and lace. Nose of ample floral hops, sweet malt, honey, herbal spice. Front taste of toasty malt, light fruit, light caramel, bittersweet citrus rind. Aftertaste is grapefruit peel, herbal hops, earthy notes, alcohol sustain. Medium body. Mouthfeel is hot, astringent, creamy on the back end.

This is an excellent DIPA. It's well constructed and true to its category, with a flavor profile of malt, fruit, and a variety of hops. This all adds up to a bittersweet malty hoppy rich brew. Very good stuff. There are better beers in this category, but not many. Seek this out. Well recommended.

From the brewery:

"This beer encompasses everything we love about Double India Pale Ales. HOPS. We used a simple two-row base malt as a vehicle to bring a burst of hops to your palate. A healthy dose of Chinook, Simcoe, and Citra is the reason we love brewing this beer."

Saint Archer Brewing White Ale

Saint Archer White Ale 1
Saint Archer Brewing White Ale. 5% abv. 12 IBU. Hazy light yellow color. Bubbly white head disappears quickly. Low retention, no lace. Aroma of white bread, grapefruit peel, coriander. Front taste of bright citrus, cloves, faint floral hops. Aftertaste of grapefruit, spice, biscuit. Thin body. Mouthfeel is bright, effervescent, dotted with sediment.

Though this beer is technically true to its category, I found its flavor was greatly overpowered by citrus and its spices offered an odd earthy taste that struck me as dulled and unpleasant. I kept thinking of the other great white ales out there, which is never a good sign. Not recommended.

From the brewery:

"Brewed with high quality Pilsner and Wheat malts, generously spiced with coriander and Fresh orange peel. Belgian yeast provides the traditional refreshingly tart, spicy, and fruity flavor profile. Wheat protein and yeast gives a customary hazy appearance and contributes to the flavor and mouth feel."

Brew Dog '5AM Saint' Hoppy Red Ale

Brew Dog '5AM Saint' Hoppy Red Ale. 5% abv. 35 IBU. Amber-ruby color. Thick ivory head that falls quickly to a thin surface with good retention and great lace. Nose is malty, floral hoppy. Front taste is caramel, strong malt, bright hops. Aftertaste is malt, hops, herbal. Medium body. Mouthfeel is warm, creamy, sticky. This is an outstanding red, better than most and worth seeking out.

From the brewery:

"Five AM is The Holy Grail of red ales. We live in a world of disposable deities. Someone, somehow has managed to press that big, flashing moronic override button and we are hard wired straight into the pockets of false idols trying to make a quick buck. Sadly, for a lot of people the same mentality applies to beer. But who is to know what is worth worshiping when monolithic advertising budgets have you sucked down the rabbit hole in the blink of an eye? At BrewDog we are on a mission to open as many peoples eyes as possible. Cast away any aspersions and let the crook of BrewDog be your guide in a whirlwind of conformity and mediocrity. Once this ruby liquid forms a foamy halo around your glass, you will never want to look back."
